TRAILS, BIRDING Set against the backdrop of the Hottentots Holland Mountains and beneath the peak of Helderberg Mountain, this 385 ha reserve has spectacular scenery as its prime attraction. Helderberg Nature Reserve is essentially a botanical reserve, and a small part of it has been cultivated to familiarise visitors with the species that they can expect to see in the natural area. Although fynbos (heath) covers most of the reserve, there is also a small pocket of indigenous forest. Cape grysbok and common duiker may be seen and there is a rich birdlife. This part of the country lies in a winter-rainfall area, and Helderberg peak is often shrouded in cloud. Location: Western part of the province; adjacent to Somerset West. Access: In Somerset West drive north-westwards (in the direction of Cape Town) along Main St and turn right into Lourensford Rd; turn left into Hillcrest Rd, right into Reservoir Rd and then left into Verster Ave. The route is well signposted. Accommodation: None. There are 2 hotels, 2 guest houses and a caravan park in Somerset West. Other facilities: Several walking trails ranging from 3 to 8 km in length; picnic sites; restaurant; kiosk open at weekends. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: Autumn and winter - 07h00 to 18h00; spring and summer - 07h00 to 20h00.
